Blue Jean Baby: Are You Old Enough to Remember This?

Who remembers this trend from the 70′s?

If you could see me now, you’d see my hand raised high in the air – I was so there, but I had a bit of a problem with mine.  Here is the story:

Growing up we would spend a two week stint of our summer vacation at our grandparent’s farm.  Albeit it was only 30 miles from town, my grandparents were old school and only made the trip into town once a week to sell eggs and pick up any supplies they couldn’t grow or make on the farm.  So when I asked my grandmother for some cool embroidery transfers to use to decorate my favorite cut-offs, I had to make do with what she had on hand … kitchen cup towel designs… with vegetable motifs and funny sayings like, “cool as a cucumber”.

Definitely not what I had in mind.

Anyway, I spent two laborious weeks embroidering in between farm chores (Hedy and I were responsible for gathering the eggs, then washing and crating them) and finally finished my cut-offs by the time I got back home.  I had stitched in “Love & Peace”, some floppy 70′s style flowers, the ubiquitous peace sign, and then I had those vegetables.  I had a big red one right on the back pocket.

I thought I was so cool until I modeled them for my parents and Dad caught the rear view of my shorts.  He made me rip out the back pocket with the big red vegetable.

It wasn’t until years later that I understood,

hot as a pepper

was not appropriate for a young girl’s behind!

As bad as I hated ripping that red pepper off, now I appreciate my dad making me do it.

Thanks, Dad – I miss you!

So you can see were I was coming from when I created Blue Jean Baby for our spring collection.  It’s not quite so faithfully rendered as my vegetable shorts, (thankfully) but updated with calicos and hand mending stitch-work.

I think it is a great 70′s look updated and perfect for now.
