As for Double D Ranch™ 20 years ago, we were:

1. just coming off of our first show with more orders for blanket coats than we had available blankets for.
   
2. scratching our heads at the retailer’s question, “What will you be showing next season?”
   
3. sending me to the Javits Center in New York for a textile sourcing show in which I returned home with a moth-eaten red bandanna …and which when Dad saw it, exclaimed, “what the H@!) are we gonna make with that?” (this bandanna would go on to be my inspiration for Double D Ranch’s™ first spring collection)
   
4. taking a gamble and ordering 500 yards of “Cherokee Indian blanket” fabric from an unknown mill in Italy. (this would prove to be far too little as we sold through within the the first two hours of our next show and ended up ordering over 4,000 yards total – see below)
5. doing our own version of an Annie Leibovitz at an abandoned church in Yoakum.

as you can see, this gives new meaning to ‘Annie get your gun’!

I can’t help but include this video clip from Margaux’s Babe contract.  I was in high school when this ran and we all wanted to be beautiful, strong, sexy and float down the river in our prom dress.

The Big Six

Although many models were referred to as supermodels during the 90s, only the so-called “Big Six” were officially recognized and accepted by the fashion world as supermodels: Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington. They were the most heavily in demand, collectively dominating magazine covers, fashion runways, editorial pages, and both print and broadcast advertising.  Excluding Moss, they are known as the “original supermodels”

Boing Boing a zine turned group blog picked it up.  If you remember a couple of months ago, Boing Boing exposed Ralph Lauren’s excessive hip carved Photoshopped ad with

“Dude, her head’s bigger than her pelvis,”

and all the fashion world logged on to see the ensuing catfight between Ralph’s suits and BB.

So anyway, here is what Boing Boing had to say about our DoubleTake on Vogue from twenty years ago:

Ralph got it right and I wore my “must have” navy blazer with jeans and boots.

Nope, this was a miss.  How was Vogue to know Kurt Cobain would spark the Grunge trend and Calvin would usher in minimalism?

Naomi looks great and not a day older twenty years later,

and Christian Lacroix got it right, unfortunately twenty years later he is looking for a buyer/bailout.

I don’t know about this one – I was starting a fledgling company and not doing the party scene.

Whoa Baby… I don’t think so, but ‘yes’ to plaids – especially flannel plaids.

I actually remember this editorial.  In fact when I saw the lead page today, I knew exactly what the room looked like on the following page.  Very deja vous and strange since I can’t even remember what I had for breakfast!
