Made in the USA Tees
Posted on 25 February 2013
This season we are trying a set a tees with production entirely in America. It’s something we’ve always wanted to do, but the means just haven’t been available. Studies show that around 1980 there were over 1 million workers in the US apparel industry and presently that number is about 350,000. According to the National Council of Textile Organizations, from 1997 to 2010, 1,300 textile mills closed. Some blame the delocalization of production to other countries. Others blame US’s trade policy, but most concur that the Internet boom made most policymakers drop the apparel and textile industries for high-tech driving forces so fashion companies were forced to adjust.
Another variable that the US textile industry wasn’t prepared for was the expansion of big-box stores like Walmart who had a major influence on consumer prices. Other countries took advantage of these factors based on their free-market or otherwise mindset of business and trade, and created a near-impossible climate for US factories.
However, for us, it’s less about the cost of producing the goods and more about the quality. We do very intricate beadwork, embroidery, and other types of handwork that is simply not being done in America. And if it is and you’ve heard of a place…CALL US AND LET US KNOW!
